The
sternpost is a key part of the structure and supports the rudder.
The joint of the sternpost with the keel is shown with the lower
deadwood block, also made of oak.
The steel drifts used to fix the sternpost, keel and deadwood together
are piled on the ground behind the keel. Special CorTen steel is
used nowadays to resist water corrosion in the same way that wrought
iron was used 120 years ago.
