Most planks for boatbuilding need to be twisted, as well as bent, to fit the hull shape. Bending planks that are 1½” thick (38mm) is difficult, so the planks were steamed in a steam chest for an hour per inch of thickness before being fitted. Although the steam chest is simply a plank box, it is remarkably effective. Here Ashley fits the sheer strake (the top plank, which is the thickest).
