Oak
is an ideal wood for the frames of ships: it is tough and durable;
the branches naturally grow at a large angle to the trunk and branches
are often curved. These features of the oak give great strength
to complex shaped objects. Oak was used for the frames of Royal
Navy ships over hundreds of years and for the Dover bronze age boat
over 3550 years ago.
How would such large baulks of timber have been transported at a
time when the roads were poor and only horses and manpower were
available?
