Favourite's planking is carvel, where the planks are joined edge to edge to form a smooth surface. Planking requires a wood which bends evenly and a straight-grained wood with small knots such as larch is used.
The piles in the background in this delivery are larch used for planking. Favourite’s original planking was probably pitch pine, but this is more difficult and expensive to obtain today. In front are two thick planks of straight oak for the keel and keelson.
