Favourite’s original planking had been fixed with expensive
bronze nails. These go light green with age as shown in the picture,
but many are still in good condition, even after 116 years, although
some have become brittle.
Later Favourite was doubled - a second layer of plank was added
– which was fixed with longer iron nails. However these iron
nails have all but rusted away. Nowadays, using different metals
close together in sea water is avoided due to electrical action
which accelerates corrosion, but in the nineteenth century this
was poorly understood.
