Hull

Photo of bow frames

Oyster yawls, of course, were made of wood, in this case oak for the frames and pine for the planking. Although the hull is in need of repair, it is possible to see exactly how she was built. Click to magnify the photos.

Fastenings are mostly bronze nails, which seems to us to be an expensive option for a fisherman.

Ballast was a mixture of low-grade iron in pigs and a quantity of concrete, which has contributed to the rot in the lower part of the hull by trapping rain water.
