The shipwright fits the frame pattern to a suitably curved oak plank. Ideally the grain would follow the shape of the frame to ensure the greatest strength. Sap wood and any defects must also be avoided. Fishing smacks were often built quite quickly - perhaps in as little as 3 months. Relatively new, unseasoned oak was used as it was easier to work and more flexible than fully seasoned wood.
