The
deadwood comprises oak timbers and a knee which strengthens the
angle between the sternpost and the keel. Tar or black tar varnish
is the traditional preservative used between the blocks. Tar products
were used widely in shipbuilding, although the original mixtures
were probably dangerous to the health of people working with them.
The new oak is now darker after soaking in linseed oil, another
traditional preservative.
